Dental braces, also termed as orthodontic braces, are instruments used by orthodontists to enhance the teeth's alignment or simply correcting it out as well as aid in improving one person's oral health. Dental braces are not only helpful in mending some biting problems such as under bites, malocclusions, overbites, cross bites, open bites, deep bites, crooked teeth but will also help in correcting some other flaws on a patient's teeth and jaw. Braces can be identified as cosmetic or structural.

When using braces, a certain amount of force and pressure is applied to the teeth causing the teeth to move. When braces put pressure on your teeth, the periodontal membrane stretches on one side and is compressed on the other. This ought to be a gradual change because if not, you will have the tendency of losing your teeth. Because of that, the use of braces usually takes about two and a half years and it would take three to four years before it is being adjusted.

Presently, there are actually different kinds of braces to select from. A few examples of these are traditional braces, clear braces, gold-plated stainless steel braces, lingual braces and titanium braces.

Traditional braces are stainless steel, sometimes in combination with nickel titanium, and are mostly used in treating children, as well as, adults. They are consist of a small self litigating brackets that is glued to the front of each tooth and the molars are adjusted with a band that encircles the tooth. Self-litigating brackets does not only minimizes the friction between the wire and the placement of the bracket it also has curative assets. The positive side about braces is that you can wear them while you’re eating or drinking but the negative side about it is that you have to drop your habit of chewing bubble gums as well as eating potato chips. Another bad side about is that it needs to be adjusted and tightened by the dentist and may mean more discomfort on the patient's part.

Clear braces are also other form of braces which can be considered as a cosmetic substitute to traditional metal braces wherein its color complements more with the natural color of the teeth making it less visible. Generally, these brackets works just like the traditional metal brackets and is designed using ceramic or plastic materials. Clear elastic ties and white metal ties are available to be used with these clear braces to help keep the appliances less conspicuous.

Accordingly, most of the patients who would choose to use gold-plated stainless steel braces are those who are hypersensitive to nickel, which is a basic and valuable component of stainless steel, while other patients also wanted to use it because of golden appearance as compared to that of the traditional silver-colored braces.

Titanum braces are also one of the braces used but its costly. Even though they look just the same with stainless steel braces, titanium braces are more lighter and are strong. Patients who choose to use titanium braces are those who have allergies on nickel but the price is very high compared to stainless steel braces.
